by Mark Whatling The changeable weather of a typical bank holiday weekend marked the opening of The Old Barn which will certainly be fitting for all seasons. The Old Barn at Field Farm opened its doors on Sunday 26 May 2019 to friends, family and locals for the first time. The Old Barn, in Idyllic Nottinghamshire countryside, is based on the outskirts of Rolleston, and handily placed for Southwell, Newark and Nottingham alike.
The new venture specialises in adult and children day courses and events focussing on farm life, the countryside and some of the lost arts and crafts of this sector. The business is the brainchild of Helen Whatling, farmers daughter, accountant by trade, who has now taken to combining these skills with her entrepreneurial talent. The guests were left to look forward to future courses and events which included floral baskets and wreath making for the adults, whilst the children’s events included the intriguingly named enchanted worlds and mud houses. The Old Barn, is based at Field Farm at Rolleston, which has been run for many years by its proprietors and Helen’s parents, Pete and Claire Foster, which specialises in arable farming and market gardening for the local communities and markets. The invited guests were welcomed by an array of homemade cakes, and hot and cold drinks, with Tractor biscuits for the children as Helen cut the ribbon and announced the Old Barn’s opening. There was a laid out country trail for all to take in, with views of some of the Farms growing specialities, a wild flower selection, and beautiful countryside views when the only noises to disturb the peace were the rising song of the Skylark as it dances overhead, the call of the swooping swallows who breed at the farm, competing with a distant tractor. Many an adult was seen to sit back and relax with a hot drink and sweet delight, as the children drove around on the array of farm vehicles, participated in the colouring competition or star of the show played with merry abandon in the mud kitchen and children’s farm shop. A great addition to the local community and certainly a course for all to look forward to in the near future.
